Master of Teaching (Dance)

Royal Academy of Dance introduces new qualification:  the Master of Teaching (Dance)

The Royal Academy of Dance is delighted to announce the launch of their first master’s programme, Master of Teaching (Dance).    The launch of the programme represents an exciting opportunity for teachers of dance who wish to further their expertise as researchers and practitioners of dance education.

This new programme provides an opportunity to combine the RAD’s significant experience in dance teacher education with the specialist expertise of a collective consortium comprising of CandoCo, Council for Dance Education and Training (CDET) and Youth Dance England (YDE). Collectively the consortium covers the current range of dance teaching contexts in the UK: public sector dance teaching (schools and FE colleges), vocational training (private sector), dance in higher education, dance and disability, youth dance and community dance.

The Master of Teaching (Dance) is a modular programme delivered via distance learning over a two or maximum three year period of part time study.  The programme offers high quality dance teachers an opportunity to engage in a:

·          focus on work-based learning as part of a commitment to continuing professional development

·          research based programme which promotes the integration of theory and reflective practice

·          modules of collaborative provision involving a consortium of independent professional organisations with a wide spectrum of dance expertise  all of which is tailored to the individual student’s needs in the light of their own dance teaching context, allowing for dance teachers to progress in their careers and be at the forefront of dance teaching innovation.

The Master of Teaching (Dance)  is comparable to any other award at M Level (MA, MSc, MEd) but has a distinct focus on the impact of teaching as a context for advanced learning, reflective practice and original thinking in and through the praxis of dance education.

In Being the Best for Our Children (DCSF March 2008) the government explained its new Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) qualification which will be introduced from September 2009. The principle of a Masters level qualified teaching profession is supported by the Universities’ Council for the Education of Teachers report Masters in Teaching and Learning: Making it work (UCET 2008).  The Royal Academy of Dance is proud to be one of the first organisations to offer a Master in Teaching award to practicing dance teachers.
