You are not so sure about it and what steps are included? Don’t know how it can be useful to you? This article will explain basic things about his concept so you could get familiar with it and know what advantages it offers to you. But before all, let us explain what a profession is.
Roughly said, it is an area of career/work that requires a professional qualification or proof that you do possess skills for a particular job. The profession is law, medicine, accountancy but also HR and marketing. Now, it is not LEGALLY required to possess the diploma or certificate in HR to work in that area, as you can additionally obtain the certificates that prove you are skilled HR consultant. Therefore, we can conclude that a profession implies the human’s area of work and his expertise. Let’s move to the CPD
It is an ongoing process of developing your professional skills that you acquire through courses, trainings or by watching other co-workers at work in your profession. There are different CPDs, depending on the company you are working for example. Also, depending on the place and regulations, it can be informal and formal. The formal one could be documenting of every skill, development milestone and condition, but its carrying out can depend on your membership, registration and a license. Usually, the formal ones are part of the employment in large corporations where the company sends the workers on the constant training and professional development sessions.
The informal one is related to watching other workers and observing their activity. This is done as a passive way of learning where you, watching other people working, can “imitate” their work. Once you are good at that, it means you have acquired the required skill by observing in an informal way. This is often done in small companies when the training is provided as the part of the employment (for example, the professional Java developer could observe and learn from other developers the different language and therefore expand its knowledge – develop his skills). Though the informal is not that common, it can be found throughout the companies and enterprises.
It has five steps: identification and planning, learning, reflecting on learning, applying knowledge and sharing knowledge. The first step is to identify what you want to learn and improve and plan your activities. The next step is to learning what you identified that you want to learn and develop your knowledge. Once you develop it, you need to remember it, so a reflection is a kind of a self-check. Now, apply the knowledge you have learned and ultimately share it with other people.
